Hillwood Estate & Gardens

David and I dropped by Hillwood Estate & Gardens on a whim yesterday while scoping out places to do a photo shoot in Rock Creek.  I’d been meaning to go and it seemed a good time.  The gardens are really lovely and the house does have quite a collection.  Ms. Merriweather Post was quite fond of buying and displaying things.  Of course, no photos allowed inside so you’ll only catch the garden and greenhouse here.

The Japanese garden is quite lovely.

But there are some rather creepy things around the house, like a pet cemetery and this lovely lady/sphinx.  Was this popular at some time?  It probably was but now just seems absurd and freaky.

Pretty cool place, all told, though.  I’d definitely consider it for an engagement shoot.

Arlington County Fair

Met up with just two DC Social peeps for an outing to the Arlington County Fair.  It was a fun time and I like the images I took.  Fairs are smorgasbords of color, people and chaos – some of my favorite things to photograph.

We met at the piglet races, where there were many pig puns to be had.  First, the ring master called for volunteers.

Then the races were on!

The pigs were faster than I thought they would be.

Our pig (the blue pig) didn’t win a single race, though there was much debate over whether the “blue pig” was the same pig each time.  It would take a true pig master to tell them apart.  That, or at least a moment of study.  Go Wilbur!

The Midway is an awesome place in any fair.

Fairlington

With little to do at work yesterday, I was sent home early and decided to take a little photowalk.  It was hotter than I anticipated and it was really quite a miserable walk.  On the whole, though, I came away with a few images I thought worthwhile.  First, I stumbled upon some lovely foliage:

As you can perhaps tell, I strapped on the 85mm to get some more practice in before my wedding on Saturday (not *my* wedding, of course).  I did have some focus problems, which I’m going to attribute to keeping the aperture at 1.8 the entire time.  I won’t be so careless at the wedding.

I love how the 85 gives you such beautiful bokeh everywhere – the 1.8 is sharp sharp sharp.

These flowers have been feeling the pain – you can see how at the tips they are burning up.  Don’t worry, flowers, this weekend looks very pleasant!
