Silver Bay, Minnesota

Aside from getting paid to do what I love (that is, take photographs and travel), one of the coolest parts of my 9-5 job is getting to go places and see things that very few people get to see.  How many of y’all have been on a 1,000 foot coal-carrying ship?  Thought so.

Yesterday we drove an hour north to get to Silver Bay, Minnesota to see one of our boats.  Good people on the ship, as always.  But we also got to travel through a very impressive facility.  Up there in Silver Bay, they mine the iron ore, process it and deliver it to the ship – all in one facility.  Part of the plant, where they were doing god-knows-what, had these huge smoke stacks billowing steam into the air.  I was absolutely enamored with them and that’s why you’re about to view four different pictures of the same thing.

Superior,Wisconsin

Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin sit across the bay from each other.  Both are mariner towns – catering in many ways to the sailors that come into dock for a few hours or a few days.  Superior is decidedly less urban, less touristy.

I found myself with a few spare hours this morning before we hit the boats and decided to take a walk.  It’s always interesting for me to take pictures when I’m traveling.  Discovering new things, buildings, quirks, people is one of the greatest pleasures in life.  It also helps when the weather is absolutely beautiful.  I had some fantastic morning light to play with.

Tuesday on the Web

abandoned grain elevator - duluth minnesotaGreetings from Duluth, Minnesota!  I’m here on business so can’t post all the awesome photos I’m taking of and on giant boats loading coal, grain and iron ore.  It’s really the best part of my 9-5 job.

Every now and then though, between visits, I can stop my colleague and tell him to hang on just one second while I snap something cool on the docks.  The abandoned grain elevator (?) to your right there is one such snap.  There’s a whole bunch of stuff like that out here and abandoned stuff is definitely one of my favorite photographic subjects.  Too bad I don’t have time to get those shots or access when I’m not following around my colleague.  For now I’ll have to be satisfied with the passing glance.  Onto the roundup!

On the Web

Each Tuesday, I post a roundup of the best stuff I saw on the internet that week.  Enjoy!
