New York City at night

I’m back in NYC again for another work function.  This time I’m all by my lonesome in the hotel room, but just about everyone in the union has come up to see our prez get some industry award.  As always, I love New York.  I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again here – I believe New York City is the most interesting place in America.  If you can’t find something exciting to see and do in NYC, you can go ahead and define yourself as a stick in the mud.

Plans for today include walking tour of Grand Central Station (hopefully lots of photos to come), likely sushi for lunch, possibly some light camera-bag shopping in Chinatown and also possibly Ground Zero.  I’ve never been to the financial district at all.  It’s lovely walking weather and I do enjoy walking.

Galveston, Texas

Latest round of work travel takes me to Galveston, Texas.  I’d never been before and I’m finding it a very nice place!  Lots of huge historic mansions and a really beautiful downtown area.  It reminds me quite a bit of New Orleans, particularly in the architecture.

Adventures today included gift shops (mostly yuck) and a trip out to a colleague’s amazing farmhouse.  He’s got some rad junkyard-lookin’ dogs.

After that, we tried to hit up the Moody Mansion but they didn’t have a tour until too late.  Still, I got some snaps around the house and garage.

Work events started at 5.  Here’s two of my colleagues, touring the Galveston tall ship.

Weekend Getaway, Day Three

After our big events on Saturday, Sunday was a very chill day as we headed back home.  We grabbed our complimentary coffee from the bizarre espresso-dispensing machine at the Aloft (because I am a *gold* preferred guest – I could play it off like I’m better than you, but I’m pretty sure I earned that status as part of a promotion) and drove off into morning headed for apple orchards!

After a bit of backtracking, we came upon Hartland Orchards.  Apparently our super-hot summer was not easy on the apples and so there was no u-picking to be done.  Nevertheless, we loaded up on a half-peck of apples, cider and local honey.  YUM.

It was a very nice trip and lovely to be away for just a little bit.  I think I will take more mini vacations.  They cost slightly less than regular vacations and the trip home is easy-peasy.
