Leslie & Katie | Stacy Sherwood Community Center wedding | Fairfax, VA

Katie and Leslie met at a Buffy the Vampire Slayer convention and they were gracious enough not to discuss the last few episodes I had yet to watch when I met them and have subsequently finished (and scoffed at - seriously, the whole town?). They also had a grilled cheese bar at their wedding with something like five bread options, seven cheese options and eight topping options. And, they're adorable. Leslie and Katie: Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-38 We started the day at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner. I have shot here a ton of times - they apparently have really great room and block rates, y'all.  The Alison Harper & Co. team rocked out hair and makeup. Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-1Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-2Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-3Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-4 Then we scooted over to Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross. Leslie is an episcopal priest, so she knows a whole bunch of other priests and basically everyone up on the altar with them was a close friend or, you know, a sister. Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-25Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-27 I was able to steal them away for five minutes while it was still light out. Winter is not very nice to wedding photographers sometimes! It's cold and it gets dark at 5pm. Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-28Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-30Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-31Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-32Virginia-same-sex-wedding-photography-33 Reception #1 a wrap, we headed to the Stacy Sherwood Community Center, where I stole them again for a handful of funkier portraits. I'm not used to processing Nikon files, which behave like my files (*gasp*)! Actually, I know there are a couple of his images in this post but I'm honestly not sure which ones in some cases. It's been such a pleasure documenting so many joyous days and a real honor to craft the images that will define one of the most important days in my clients' lives. 2013 was unbelievable. 2014 is going to be incredible. For now, I'm signing off and taking a long vacation. Many congratulations to everyone who got married in 2013! I'll catch you on the flip side.

Yuliya & AJ | Arts Club of Washington wedding | Washington, DC

Yuliya and AJ were married at the always-colorful, always charming Arts Club of Washington. They flew in for less than a week (!) of visiting and last-minute things and pre-wedding stuff, before jetting back on a plane to Australia (where they live and work). They filled the Arts Club with one day of boundless laughter, a playful wedding party and, of course, shots. Yuliya and AJ: Arts-Club-of-Washington-wedding-photography-45 We started the day at the Hotel Lombardy, which I highly recommend to anyone having a wedding at the Arts Club - it's literally next door. Arts-Club-of-Washington-wedding-photography-1Arts-Club-of-Washington-wedding-photography-2 Yuliya wore a fabulous dress with a flouncy mermaid bottom (yes, I'm so suave with the dress name things). Susy & Nick | Carlyle House wedding | Cherry Blossom Riverboat | Alexandria, VA

Susy and Nick were married at the beautiful, historic Carlyle House and then got on a big old boat to party the night away. A few days before their wedding, we took a quick trip to the Carlyle House to scope it out and talk logistics, and all the trees were still green and there wasn't much going on by way of fall colors. But nature decided to kick into high gear just in time for the wedding, to create a beautiful orange backdrop and some truly wonderful colors for us to work with for portraits. Susy & Nick: Carlyle-House-wedding-42 We started the day at the Hotel Monaco Alexandria. I love shooting in Monacos - they give photographers tons of texture, patterns and color to work with. Carlyle-House-wedding-12 Now you all know I'm normally not fussy with taking 1,000 bridal portraits, but Susy planned the most ridiculously laid-back timeline ever, so we found ourselves with a good half-hour to play at the Monaco. Carlyle-House-wedding-13 It was fun. Carlyle-House-wedding-14Carlyle-House-wedding-15 The ring bearer, getting dolled up. Look at those eyes! Carlyle-House-wedding-16 Then we walked a few blocks across town to the Carlyle House to get these two good and hitched. Carlyle-House-wedding-17Carlyle-House-wedding-18 The ring bearer successfully made it down the aisle, but looped on back for a second go. Carlyle-House-wedding-46Carlyle-House-wedding-48 We hopped back over to the Monaco to balance out pretty fall colors and Old Town's brick with some artsy portraits. I think I'm addicted. If you look reallllly closely, you can see the Washington monument (center) and the Capitol (tiny bit of brightness 1/4 from the right). This could be blown up enormous.
