Irene & Idrissa | Corcoran Gallery of Art | Anytime | Washington, DC

Irene and Idrissa have been married for over a decade, but, like the proverbial cobbler's kids, Irene doesn't wear shoes. Anyway, she's a great photographer, so it was very humbling to be asked to do photos for her family. We even hit up a new museum for me - the Corcoran Gallery of Art. The gallery is on it's way to becoming part of the Smithsonian so who knows what the place will be like in a few months. In the meantime, we soaked up some of the cool modern abstract stuff and rocked out the Duck Pond too. I know that. And you shouldn't do it. But sometimes you just roll with it and fire off a few before the guards start yelling. And it's worth it. Shawn, Randall & Baby R | Maryland Documentary Family Photography

One of the joys of being a part of such a big moment in my clients' lives is watching them grow from there. I come in at a big transition, and sometimes I get called back in for other changes, like new additions. Shawn and Randall had Baby R just a couple weeks before I came to their house to do a few portraits and document a little sliver of their lives as new parents. documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-15 We shot in their home, as that is where new parents spend all of their time. I believe the "normal" is beautiful - the wonder, discovery, gratitude and also the exhaustion, the spit-ups, the poopy diapers. Life is short. Photos help. Doggies too. documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-1 (S&R - don't worry. I gave you a ton of color photos too. I just thought the black and white worked well for the setting.) documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-3documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-4documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-5documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-7documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-8documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-10documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-11documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-12documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-13documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-14documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-16documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-17documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-18documentary-family-photography-in-maryland-19 Baby R is so tiny! Shannon & Tim | National Mall couple photography

Shannon and Tim are married, but they're so awesome, they want cool photos of themselves just because (and, you know, plus headshots). We hit up the National Mall before hardly any of these flowering trees started doing their thing. Couple of who-knows purple things and some juuuuust barely getting there Magnolias and mission accomplished. Though, honestly, some dead-looking dangly trees are more up my aesthetic alley. national mall engagement photography engagement photos on the national mall engagement photography with magnolia trees magnolia trees in engagement photos engagement photography on the national mall But of course, my favorite images, always, depend on light. This scene isn't from a garden or a cool place of any sort. They're standing on a grate with a loading dock behind them. But this happened to be the spot in front of a big beige building, throwing tons of beautiful light back at them. national mall engagement photos engagement photos with daffodils engagement photos in the fountain by the air and space museum
